What taxis are used in Edinburgh?

Most of the Edinburgh taxis are the classic British ‘black cabs’, similar to those found in London and other UK cities. They have a taxi light on the roof, which means they’re available if it’s lit up, and already in use if it’s not. Official taxis must have a registration number displayed on the inside and outside as well.

The regular sized taxis have rear-facing seats in the cabin, so they can take 5 passengers. There are also larger minivan style ones that seat 7 passengers, and all of them have plenty of luggage space too.

You may also see private hire cars, which look like ordinary cars, but have a sticker on the side that reads “pre-booked hires only”. These can only be taken by calling a taxi company, or using an app, such as Uber.

How do I book a taxi?

Black cabs with their light turned on can simply be waved down in the street. There are also various taxi stands in the city’s busier locations, such as Edinburgh Waverley train station.

To pre-book a taxi, or get one to come directly to your location, you can call any of the city’s taxi services, or use their websites or booking apps. This will require a £0.80 booking fee, and a £2.20 cancellation fee. If you’re planning to use an Edinburgh taxi for a long distance trip out of the city, it’s recommended to pre-book.

How much do taxis cost, and should I tip the driver?

All Edinburgh taxis must use a standard tariff system, and display the fare on a screen above the driver. Your fare is determined by the distance covered, and any waiting time, so payment is always made to the driver at the end of the journey. On average, trips within the city centre cost £4-£8, and you can pay by cash, card, and contactless. Tipping is not required or expected, but most people round up to the nearest pound.

You can find the current taxi fares on the Edinburgh City Council website here.

How do I take a taxi from Edinburgh airport to the city centre?

When arriving in Edinburgh airport, you can take a black city cab by following the signs, which direct you to the pick-up zone, on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park opposite the terminal building. You can also pre-book a private hire car online, and the driver will meet you at the same pick-up area.

To return to the airport, you can arrange a taxi in the same ways described above, or ask your accommodation to assist you.

The airport journey takes around 30 minutes and usually costs £20-£25. There is also a £2.80 pick-up, and £1 drop-off surcharge.
